SOMETHING FOR THE BOYS – Musicals Tonight – Ends Run to RAVE REVIEW!!!

MUSICALS TONIGHT’S last offer of the Spring Season, the Ethel Merman vehicle, SOMETHING FOR THE BOYS, rounds out their season with a rave review and sold out shows!

The reviews are glowing:

“The big problem in mounting a Merman vehicle is finding a Merman. Lauren Elaine Taylor never once imitates the star, but her Blossom has the necessary spunk and sass, along with a clarion voice all her own that punches out into the house with warmth and color.”

“Handsome Mike Backes is a take-charge, square-jawed Rocky, underplaying nicely and singing his big ballad,“Could It Be You?,” with period panache. Valerie Lynn Williams doesn’t get that much to do as Chiquita (an affliction that often plagued Merman’s female co-stars), but she’s amusingly full of herself and a hoot lapsing into pidgin French in “By the Mississinewah,” a performance number that has Blossom and Chiquita cavorting as an Indian chief’s two sex-starved wives. Erin Elizabeth Coors simpers and smolders well as Melanie, and Jody Cook stands out in the low-comedy role of a Texas good ol’ boy named Twitch.”

Congratulations to the cast on a brilliant run:

Lauren Elaine Taylor, Valerie Lynn Williams, Mike Backes, Erin Elizabeth Coors, David Edwards, Roger Rifkin, Rita Markova, Ben Liebert, Justin Flagg, Annette Michelle Sanders, Josh Houghton, Matthew Schatz, Carlos Martin, Dan Debenport, Merissa Czyz, Daniella Dalli, Savannah Frazier, Amy Grass and Jody Cook.

Congratulations to the Cast of SITTING PRETTY with Musicals Tonight!

Congratulations to the Cast of SITTING PRETTY on a brilliant run at the Lion Theatre!

Directed by Thomas Sabella-Mills with musical direction by David Bishop, the cast includes:

John Alban Coughlan, Scott Guthrie, Mary Stout,  Diane Phelan, Chelsea Barker, Sara Jayne Blackmore, Graham Bailey, Paul Romero, Graham Stuart Allen, William Broderick, Brian Maxsween, Caitlin McBride, Steve Parmenter, Jacey Powers, Angelina Sark, Jason Simon, Barbara Winn and Aaron Young.

Paul Romero, Jason Simon, and Graham Bailey

Backstage says of the cast,  ”As the young lovers, Phelan and Guthrie are splendid, singing like angels and playing it straight. Barker and Bailey make a delightful down-market comedy duo, and Romero gets all of Uncle Jo’s laughs, seemingly channeling Jackie Gleason.”

Congratulations to the cast of LIL’ ABNER with Musicals Tonight!!

The citizens of Dogpatch are taking NYC by storm and pulling in some rave reviews along the way!

Here’s what critics are saying:

“The entire cast does credit to the comic book style of the piece. As the iconic lovebirds, Jessica Wagner makes a sweet voiced and fetching Daisy Mae, while Bill Coyne brings a pleasing voice and believable bumpkin-ness to the title character. Broadway veteran Mary Stout takes peerless comic command as Mammy Yokum. As her seemingly cowed husband who gits gumption near the play’s end, Roger Rifkin proves an excellent Pappy Yokum. Jody Cook displays a fine funny flair as Marryin’ Sam. Mike O’Carroll is fine as General Bullmoose and, despite some antediluvian lyrics, manages to pull off nicely the song “Progress is the Root of All Evil.” Almost everyone else in the ensemble takes on multiple roles and they do it well.”

“But what really makes this revival sparkle is its high-octane, 17-member cast. The performers mine every morsel of comedy out of the script’s amusing topical references and parodic characters.” – Backstage

Tom Mills directs and choreographs the show for Musicals Tonight!, with Bill Coyne in the title role and Jessica Wagner as Daisy Mae, Mary Stout and Roger Rifkin as Mammy and Pappy Yokum, Jody Cook as Marryin’ Sam, David Brent Howard as Earthquake McGoon, Mike O’Carroll as General Bullmoose, John Alban Coughlan as Senator Fogbound, Dan Debenport as Dr. Finsdale, Alison Maldonado as Stupefyin’ Jones, Gary Littman as Evil Eye Fleagle, and Jennifer Winegardner doing double duty as Moonbeam McSwine and Appassionata Von Climax.

L’il Abner features musical direction by James Stenborg, and the ensemble consists of Lindsay Braverman, Savannah Frazier, BJ Olson, David Raimo, and Aaron Young. The show runs March 20-April 1 at the Lion; for more information, visit musicalstonight.org.

Congratulations to the cast of STINKY KIDS at Vital Theatre!!!

STINKY KIDS at Vital Theatre has opened to rave reviews!!!

Nytheatre.com says:

“The strong musical numbers are helped by a cast that can handle them. Vital has assembled a good group of singers, but also actors who perform this material without the caricature. That’s a real skill in children’s theatre, and one you don’t see enough.”

Congratulations to an outstanding cast:

Lora Nicolas, Laura Weiner, A.J. Patton, Bryce Payne, Madison Turner, and  Ryan Mikita

MILLBROOK PLAYHOUSE SEASON ANNOUNCED!!!

We are pleased to announce our 2012 SEASON of MUSICALS, MYSTERY AND MAYHEM!

Our MAINSTAGE THEATRE:

ALL SHOOK UP by Joe DiPietro.  June 14-17, 20-24.

by Joe DiPietro

When a hip swiveling hunk rides into town, he has teenagers and adults alike jumping out of their blue suede shoes… Elvis Presley music stirs an explosion of romance and rebellion in 1950’s small town America through the power of rock and roll!

“Don’t Be Cruel” to the “Jailhouse Rock”…”C’mon Everybody” – it’s “All Shook Up!”

SHE LOVES ME June 28-July 1,  July 5-8.

book by Joe Masteroff, music Jerry Block, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick.

It’s Date Night!  Widely considered the most charming musical ever written,She Loves Me hails from Jimmy Stewart’s “The Shop Around the Corner” and Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan “You’ve Got Mail.”  The story of a store clerk and a salesgirl who cannot stand each other, yet they are – unknowingly – romantic pen pals!

This endearing classic is well timed to our modern love affair with Internet dating!

YOU’RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN! July 12-15, 18-22.

by Clark Gesner, additional dialogue Michael Mayer, additional music & lyrics Andrew Lippa.

Yes! It’s the beloved musical about the average day in the life of famous comic strip child hero, Charlie Brown.  With Linus, Schroeder, Lucy, Sally Brown and of course… Snoopy!  Whether flying “The Kite” or saluting “Suppertime,” join the Peanuts gang in this hilarious musical guaranteed to please all ages – bring the kids!

THE 39 STEPS July 26-29, August 1-5.

by Patrick Barlow based on the movie by Alfred Hitchcock.

The Chase is on! Watch the comical magic of theatre spoof this famous Alfred Hitchcock film and the entire spy-thriller genre – intrigue turns hilarious as four actors create over 100 characters in a tale of foreign spies, glamorous heroines, train chases and narrow escapes! Laughter is relentless and everyone wants to know…“What are The 39 Steps?!”

…and  on THE CABARET STAGE:

LEND ME A TENOR –  June 21-24, June 27-July 1.

By Ken Ludwig

Chaos on a truly operatic level – this screwball comedy turns madcap when a famous opera singer goes missing and the show’s producer conspires with his hapless assistant to cover for the singer’s absence, sooth his hot-tempered wife, and distract his most passionate fans.  A door-slamming farce from the director of past Millbrook seasons’ “Love, Sex and the I.R.S.” and “What The Bellhop Saw”

DEAD MAN’S CELL PHONE –  July 5-8, 11-15.

by Sarah Ruhl

Do you have to answer that cell phone?  The guy at the next table has croaked, when his cell phone won’t stop ringing Jean impulsively answers The Call. This fateful act dials her deeply into the dead man’s mysterious business and insanely eccentric family, and Jean’s introverted life catapults into the limelight.

A darkly funny odyssey about our cellular obsession!

I’LL BE BACK BEFORE MIDNIGHT July 19-22, 25-29.

by Peter Colley

Ghost tales and startling events collide in this mystery thriller, when an anxious woman and her husband rent a remote cabin from an odd farmer.  Somewhere between an Agatha Christie mystery and a haunted house, laughter mixes with heart-thumping scares to make an irresistible ghoulish tale…

THE FANTASTICKS! –  August 2-5, 8-12.

by Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones

The longest running musical in history!

A simple romantic comedy about a boy, a girl, their meddling fathers and the wall that divides them.  Add stage fools and a mute, and it’s a story of charming simplicity, captivating music and whimsy.  Just “Try To Remember” a time when this romantic charmer wasn’t enchanting audiences everywhere!

And don’t forget our fantastic Children’s Theatre:

VELMA GRATCH AND THE WAY COOL BUTTERFLY, June 23, 30, July 1, 2012.A musical of the favorite book: from migration to metamorphosis, Velma stops feeling unimportant when a class trip (and a very friendly butterfly) changes everything. No one will ever forget it… or her!

PINOCCHIO, July 14, 21, 28, 2012. A classic! An interactive tale of the puppet that wants to be a real boy – the audience helps tell our story!
